While often called a novel, this book consists of 13 tightly interwoven stories, a familiar format for Jewett. Two 24-year-old city dwellers, Helen Denis and Kate Lancaster, visit the rural Maine town of Deephaven for the summer. Over the course of their stay they meet many idiosyncratic locals, including the eccentric lighthouse keeper Mrs. Kew, the town gossip Olive Grant, and others. The two women compare life in the city to life in the country, and Jewett uses their experiences to contrast the two sides of the American experience. Several of the chapters were previously published by Jewett's friend James Thomas Fields in the Atlantic Monthly.
